Malcolm Macarthur transferred to open prison for murder

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Malcolm Macarthur was transferred to Shelton Abbey open prison while serving a life sentence for murder, reported on 7 May 2003; no court is identified. He was convicted over the 1982 murder of nurse Bridie Gargan, who was bludgeoned to death while sunbathing in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. The report said Macarthur was believed to have shot farmer Donal Dunne three days later, although he was never prosecuted for that killing. His transfer from Mountjoy prison followed a Parole Board recommendation, and the case was due for review again in a year.

This case may have concluded differently. The outcome has not yet been confirmed by a public source we could find.
