Maha Al Adheem pleaded not guilty to murdering her son, Omar Omran. The alleged murder took place at her home in Riverside, Poddle Park, Kimmage, Dublin 12, on 10 July 2017. Her trial opened at the Central Criminal Court on 17 December 2018. The proceedings were reported on 18 December 2018.

Opening the trial, prosecuting counsel Michael Delaney SC said an insanity defence was being raised. He said psychiatrists for both sides agreed that Ms Al Adheem met the criteria for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Neighbours told the jury she had been a caring and protective mother to Omar.

Evidence also included a pathologist’s account that Omar died from multiple stab wounds, including wounds that penetrated his heart and lungs. The trial was continuing before Ms Justice Eileen Creedon and a jury.
