Luke McGann was given a 12-month sentence, suspended in full on strict conditions, for stealing from his grandmother’s partner’s lottery winnings. The proceedings were reported on 19 November 2024.

McGann, 20, of St Catherine’s Green, Rush, Co Dublin, came forward from the District Court on signed pleas of guilty to 24 charges of theft. The offences took place between June and July 2023. He had no previous convictions.

The man had won €87,000 in April 2023 and needed to open a bank account to receive it. McGann helped him set up the account, then added his card details to his own Apple Pay account. Over three weeks, he stole €14,886 in 24 transactions.

An investigating garda told prosecuting counsel Derek Cooney BL that McGann had been under financial pressure after intimidation arising from a drug debt. He initially used the money to pay the debt, but then bought a scrambler bike and other items. McGann later said he had been under pressure with money but got carried away.

The man noticed money missing in July 2023 and contacted the bank. McGann attended a Garda station voluntarily the following October and made admissions. The court heard that the bank fully reimbursed the victim and that he forgave McGann. It was accepted that McGann stopped stealing of his own accord before the victim discovered the loss.

Judge Orla Crowe described the thefts as a huge breach of trust but acknowledged McGann’s immediate admissions and cooperation. She set a headline sentence of 18 months, reduced it to 12 months for mitigation and suspended it in full.
