The Minister for Justice approved an application by Logan Jackson to transfer from Limerick Prison to a UK jail near his family. The decision was confirmed on 2 March 2023.
Jackson was convicted of the murder of champion boxer Kevin Sheehy and sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2021. Sheehy, who was 20, died after Jackson repeatedly ran him over in a 4×4 vehicle at Hyde Road, Limerick, on 1 July 2019.
A jury at the Central Criminal Court unanimously rejected Jackson’s defence of provocation.
Sheehy’s mother, Tracey Tully, challenged an earlier transfer decision in the High Court. She argued that it breached her rights under victims’ legislation and that her rights to be consulted about any parole application by Jackson would be extinguished if he were transferred.
The Minister rescinded the earlier approval and the proceedings were resolved. On 16 November 2022, Ms Justice Siobhan Phelan was told that the parties had agreed the case could be struck out. The court ordered the State to pay legal costs incurred by Tully and Jackson.
After the later decision was confirmed, Tully said she had not been notified that the Minister was deciding the matter. She said she would continue to investigate legal avenues to prevent the transfer. The report described Jackson as being held in Limerick Prison.
