Liam Power’s murder conviction appeal dismissed

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Liam Power’s appeal against his murder conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal, reported on 5 June 2018. The court held that the trial was not unfair or unsatisfactory and that the verdict was not unsafe. Power was convicted by a majority verdict of 10 to 2 on 16 November 2016 after the death of Gints Intenpergs in Tullow, County Carlow. He had argued that evidence of his intoxication and the judge’s directions on specific intent affected the conviction. The court rejected those grounds. The same judgment records that Power was acquitted of an assault charge concerning Aigars Sildars.
