This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Leo Doyle told Dublin District Coroner’s Court on 12 July 2023 that he could not say whether Stardust nightclub’s exit doors were unlocked during the fire that killed 48 people. The fire occurred at the club in Dublin on 14 February 1981.

Doyle said he did not remember telling gardaí that exits one and six had been locked and chained while the club was open. He also said he could not say whether the locks and chains were off on the night of the fire because he had not checked them.

He described a practice of joining chains with a lock and placing them over doors to give the impression they were locked. Doyle did not accept that this practice was inherently dangerous. The inquest was continuing, with further evidence due the next day.
