Lee Somers was jailed for five years after leaving luggage containing just under €600,000 worth of cannabis on a carousel at Dublin Airport following a “crisis of conscience”. The proceedings were reported on 24 March 2026.

Somers, 31, had arrived on a flight from Canada and was due to travel on to Scotland.

An earlier report said Somers, of Greenfields, Rosbrien Road, Limerick, was arrested after a cannabis seizure at Dublin Airport on 2 March 2024. It valued the haul at €720,000.

He was charged with importing cannabis, possessing cannabis for sale or supply, and simple possession of cannabis. At the time of the earlier report, he had yet to indicate a plea to the three charges.

Garda Tanya Shinkins told Dublin District Court that Somers had not replied to any of the charges. Gardaí objected to bail, but his solicitor said he was not seeking bail at that time. Judge Teresa Kelly remanded him in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on 7 March 2024 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
