An unnamed Kildare man was sentenced to five years and eight months, with the final 20 months suspended, for aggravated sexual assault at the Court of Appeal on 18 May 2023.

The assault took place at his estranged wife’s home in Co Kildare on 19 November 2020. The court said he had come there on the pretence of fixing a burst tyre before assaulting her.

The Court of Appeal quashed the original sentence and set a headline term of eight and a half years, reduced by one third before the final 20 months were suspended.

The man had pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault. Two other sexual assault counts were taken into consideration.
