Kevin McMenamin avoids extra jail for dangerous driving

Kevin McMenamin’s 21-month sentence for dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 6 May 2025.
The court dismissed the Director of Public Prosecutions’ appeal, finding that although the sentence might be lenient, it was not unduly lenient. McMenamin had been disqualified from driving when he drove through a red light in a lorry and struck a cyclist at the junction of Herbert Park Road and Morehampton Road in Ballsbridge.
The court said imprisonment was merited, while noting his guilty plea, work history and character references as mitigating factors. It also noted the absence of speed, intoxication or mobile phone use as aggravating features. His five-year driving disqualification remains in place.
