Kevin McCarthy was sentenced to four years, with two and a half years suspended, for dangerous driving causing death at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 5 April 2017. The crash near Brittas, Co Dublin, killed his best friend Thomas Carroll, a 21-year-old passenger.
McCarthy had pleaded guilty and was driving at around twice the speed limit when he lost control, hitting trees and a pole before the car overturned.
The court heard he had 73 previous convictions, most involving documentary road-traffic offences. Judge Pauline Codd said his remorse was great and that he had accepted full responsibility.
Carroll’s family walked out of the court after the partially suspended sentence was imposed.
