Kevin Braney found guilty of IRA membership

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Kevin Braney and Ciaran Maguire were found guilty of IRA membership by the Special Criminal Court in May 2018. The court said there was no reasonable possibility that Braney and Maguire were not members of the unlawful organisation on 2 August 2017. They were remanded in custody until 24 July for sentencing.

The case arose from a charge that the men belonged to an organisation styling itself the IRA. The court also heard that they had threatened a man over an accident claim; the membership finding followed a trial at which the judges considered testimony from the man and belief evidence from a senior garda officer.
