Kevin Braney denied bail over IRA membership charge
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Kevin Braney was refused bail after being charged with membership of an unlawful organisation. Ciaran Maguire was named as his co-accused. The proceedings were reported on 10 August 2017.
Gardaí objected to Braney’s bail application on several grounds, most seriously concern for the safety of their main witness. Tony McGillicuddy said his client was entitled to the presumption of innocence and that there was no evidence to suggest he would abscond or intimidate witnesses.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt refused bail, saying the court was satisfied that potential interference with witnesses was a real concern.
