Kevin Braney denied bail in IRA membership case
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Kevin Braney was denied bail in a case involving alleged IRA membership. The proceedings were reported on 10 August 2017.
Braney and his co-accused, Ciaran Maguire, were charged with membership of an unlawful organisation. Gardaí objected to Braney’s bail application on several grounds, the most serious being concern for the safety of their main witness.
Tony McGillicuddy said his client Braney was entitled to the presumption of innocence and that there was no evidence to suggest he would jump bail or intimidate witnesses. Mr Justice Tony Hunt refused bail, saying the court was satisfied that potential interference with witnesses was a real concern.
