Kevin Braney was further charged with the murder of Peter Butterly before the Special Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 14 September 2017. Butterly was shot dead outside The Huntsman Inn in Gormanston, Co Meath, on 6 March 2013.

Braney also faced charges of IRA membership on 2 August 2017 and 6 March 2013. He was charged with possessing a 9mm Beretta pistol and seven rounds of ammunition with intent to commit murder at Blackthorn Apartments in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, on 5 March 2013.

Detective Sergeant Liam Archbold said that, when cautioned, Braney described the charge as politically motivated and said he was being framed by a State-paid supergrass. He demanded a fair trial by jury.

State Solicitor Rioghnach Corbett told the court that the DPP sought a trial before the non-jury Special Criminal Court on the murder charge. Presiding judge Mr Justice Tony Hunt remanded Braney in custody to appear again the following Thursday.
