Kenneth Philpott was jailed for three years for cannabis possession at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to possessing the drugs on 10 April 2024. The proceedings were reported on 19 March 2025.

Philpott, then aged 64, was stopped after gardaí saw him driving in a bus lane. He was co-operative but nervous and told gardaí there were packages in the car. They found 7kg of cannabis valued at €140,000 in the car and a further €80,000 worth at his home.

Philpott said he had built up a €2,400 gambling debt. The court heard that threats had been made against his family and home and that he felt he had no choice. He had collected the drugs, left some at his house and shed, and was returning home with a second load when stopped. Defence counsel said gardaí did not dispute the threats Philpott outlined.

Passing sentence the previous Friday, Judge Martin Nolan said others had taken advantage of Philpott’s debt and that he had made a huge misjudgement. The judge cited his co-operation, good history, work record, fear and coercion as mitigation. He set a headline sentence of six years and reduced it to three years because of the mitigation.
