Kellie Walton was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 19 January 2022 to four years in prison, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions. Judge Melanie Greally imposed the sentence for offending involving Virgin Media Television.
Walton pleaded guilty to stealing €70,614 on an unknown date in 2019 and €34,961 on an unknown date in 2009. She also pleaded guilty to one charge of false accounting between 2009 and 2019. The proceedings were reported on 19 January 2022.
The court heard that Walton had worked as a payroll administrator for the company since 2006 and began stealing in 2009. A total of €872,437 was taken. At a previous sentencing hearing in December 2021, prosecuting counsel Eoghan Cole said the pleas represented sample theft charges, one for each year from 2009 to 2019, and that additional money laundering charges could be taken into account.
Defence counsel Fiona Murphy said Walton began stealing when her partner could not work because of ill health and the family was under financial stress. She said the money was used to soften the edges of family life. Judge Greally noted that the employment situation had resolved after two years while the thefts continued, and said the amounts involved were more than softening the edges.
The judge said Walton had almost exclusive access to the payroll system and had concealed her activities for a long period. Walton had no previous convictions. Judge Greally said the punishment would be severely punitive to Walton’s young children when suspending part of the sentence.
