Keila Pineda Lopez was jailed for three years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for possessing cocaine for sale or supply. The proceedings were reported on 24 February 2018. The offence occurred at Dublin Airport on 22 November 2017, after customs officers found 20 shirts soaked with cocaine in her luggage.
The cocaine that could have been extracted from the shirts was estimated to have a street value of €179,550. Lopez pleaded guilty and had no previous convictions.
Lopez told gardaí she had been offered €3,000 to transport the drugs and made allegations of threats. Gardaí accepted that a mixture of inducement and coercion was involved in her participation.
Judge Melanie Greally imposed the sentence from the date Lopez entered custody, departing from the presumptive ten-year minimum because of the circumstances of the case.
