Kasim Muchhala received an 18-month suspended sentence for money laundering at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 20 July 2022.
Muchhala pleaded guilty to money laundering on the basis of recklessness when €72,070 was transferred into his account.
Muchhala, of Temple Woods, Greenhills Road, Dublin 24, had allowed a friend and colleague, referred to in court as “suspect A”, to use his account several times between January and October 2019.
Detective Garda David Egan said suspect A stole €1.2 million from the financial services company where they worked through fraudulent expense claims. He said €72,050 was laundered through Muchhala’s account, but Muchhala received no reward or money for his role.
Egan agreed with defence counsel Edward Doocey that Muchhala was not involved in the theft and did not know where his colleague had obtained the money. He accepted that Muchhala said he believed his colleague was a shrewd investor interested in stocks. Doocey said Muchhala should have been aware of the risk of allowing his account to be used.
Judge Martin Nolan accepted that Muchhala did not know his friend was using the account to defraud another entity. He said it would be very unjust to imprison him and suspended the 18-month sentence on strict conditions.
