Karl Ronan was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to six years in prison for raping his younger sister, with the final six months suspended. He also received a concurrent three-year sentence for indecent assault.
Ronan pleaded guilty to raping and indecently assaulting Lynn Ronan. The proceedings were reported on 8 May 2024.
The offences occurred between 1982 and 1986, when Lynn Ronan was aged between 10 and 14. The court heard that the abuse took place in Dublin, Laois and Galway. Their mother discovered it in 1986, and Lynn Ronan reported it as an adult in 2018.
Mr Justice Paul McDermott said the offences would have merited very high penalties had Ronan been an adult during the offending, given their frequency and the repeated rapes. The judge said Ronan had bullied and dominated his sister and blighted her childhood, teenage years and adulthood. He also noted Ronan’s continuous work record and lack of criminal convictions.
The suspended portion of the sentence was subject to conditions, including that Ronan engage with the Probation Service for two years after his release. The judge ordered him to attend programmes deemed suitable by the service and to have no direct or indirect contact with Lynn Ronan.
