Karl Donohoe was sentenced to 12 years, with the final two suspended, for manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court, reported on 24 April 2012. The charge followed the death of Raymond Bates after a hurley attack at the junction of Tritonville Road and Sandymount Road on 30 September 2010.

Donohoe had pleaded guilty to manslaughter after the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted his plea to the murder charge. Mr Justice Paul Carney said the violence and its effect on Mr Bates’s family were aggravating factors, while the guilty plea supported suspending the final two years.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
