Kalmar Solutions AB and Scruttons (NI) Ltd were fined a combined €450,000 at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 24 March 2025 for workplace safety offences.
The case followed the death of haulier Nicholas Collier, 55, who was struck by a container handler at Dublin Port on 14 August 2019. Kalmar had pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the handler was designed and constructed safely, including addressing restricted visibility from the driving position; Scruttons had pleaded guilty to failing to identify and assess that visibility hazard and keep a written risk assessment.
The court imposed a €150,000 fine on Kalmar and a €300,000 fine on Scruttons, with six months to pay. The companies’ fines followed an HSA investigation into the fatal incident.
