Judge: “Passions should have cooled” before men left injured Mahamud Ilyas

Viorel Doroscan and Otniel Richardo Clejan were sentenced to life in prison for murdering Mahamud Ilyas, 22, at the Central Criminal Court. At sentencing, Mr Justice Tony Hunt said their “passions should have cooled” by the time they reached Belgree Lane, where they left Ilyas seriously injured.

The judge said the “disrespectful and callous way” Ilyas was dealt with extinguished whatever chance he had of surviving. The court heard that the men had beaten him with a hammer, kicked and stamped on him, then left him in a wooded area in Co Meath. Both had denied murder; a jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts earlier in 2025.
