This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Joseph Hogan was jailed for 15 years for raping his niece at the Central Criminal Court on 9 March 2015. The offences occurred at a house in County Limerick between December 1984 and December 1988. A jury convicted Hogan of three counts of rape, one attempted rape and three counts of indecent assault. The sentences imposed for the other offences are to run concurrently.

Mr Justice Paul Carney declared Hogan a sex offender and ordered 18 months of post-release supervision. The court took account of the victim’s age, the breach of trust, the duration of the offending and its impact on her. Hogan had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Hogan had previously been jailed for an indecent assault in Ireland and convicted of another such offence in the United Kingdom. He also had later indecent-assault convictions and was jailed in 2013 for breaching sex-offender orders.
