This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Joseph Curran was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 14 April 2022 to eight-and-a-half years’ imprisonment for robbery and theft, with the final two-and-a-half years suspended on strict conditions. Judge Melanie Greally imposed the sentence. The proceedings were reported on 14 April 2022.

Curran pleaded guilty to robbery in Crumlin and theft at Walkinstown Avenue, both committed on 22 June 2021. He also pleaded guilty to two robberies at Beechwood Avenue, Ranelagh, committed on 16 September 2021, and had previously pleaded guilty to burglary at Shelton Park, Kimmage, on 10 October 2019.

The report said four elderly women were targeted, with three knocked to the ground. Garda evidence described bags being taken, while Curran was identified on CCTV. Marc Thompson BL said Curran wanted to apologise and asked the court to consider that addiction had driven the offending and funded his habit.

Judge Greally said the offences were aggravated by the women’s age and vulnerabilities and their impact on the victims. She also considered Curran’s negative tests for illegal substances in custody and a probation report indicating motivation to stop offending.
