Joseph Carroll was sentenced to five years, with the final year suspended, for two counts of threatening to kill at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 28 March 2023. Judge Orla Crowe imposed conditions including engagement with therapies and supports set out by the Probation Service.

Carroll pleaded guilty to threatening to kill at a Tallaght address on 29 May and 19 July 2020. The report said he threatened gardaí with weapons and a Pit Bull dog during the incidents; a Garda agreed with defence counsel that the dog was not found to be very aggressive.

The defence described his excessive drug and alcohol abuse, suicide attempts and a brain bleed caused by an earlier assault. Carroll was also in breach of a suspended 18-month sentence for a 2018 public-order incident. The proceedings were reported on 3 April 2023.
