This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Jonathan Moran was jailed for nine years, with the final year suspended, for rape and aggravated sexual assault at the Central Criminal Court on 1 July 2024. The offences occurred in Galway in July 2019.

The court heard that Blathnaid Raleigh suffered extensive physical injuries requiring months of treatment. Moran had claimed the sexual activity was consensual and denied using an implement; the jury convicted him of the offences.

Judge Tony Hunt said the case highlighted the importance of consent and that serious sexual offences required an immediate custodial sentence. The suspended year was subject to a bond and conditions, including no future direct or indirect contact with Raleigh.
