Jonathan Dowdall resentenced for false imprisonment and threats

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Jonathan Dowdall was resentenced for false imprisonment and threatening to kill at the Court of Appeal on 23 April 2018, receiving 10 years with the final 25 months suspended.

The appeal court found errors in how the Special Criminal Court treated a Newton Hearing, the timing of guilty pleas and mitigating circumstances.

Dowdall and his father had pleaded guilty after Alexander Hurley was detained and assaulted at Dowdall’s Dublin home in January 2015. The court heard that a video showed water being poured over Hurley’s face, while threats were made against him.

The suspended period required Dowdall to enter a good behaviour bond.
