Jonathan Coelho pleaded guilty to a number of dangerous driving charges at locations around Kevin Street, Dublin 8. The proceedings were reported on 1 September 2020.
Coelho and Federico Carvalho denied assault causing harm to Garda Conor Murray on 31 July 2019 at St Lukes’ Avenue, Dublin 8. Coelho also denied endangering Murray on the same occasion. Coelho admitted driving the car that night, while Carvalho admitted he was the passenger.
Murray told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that he approached the passenger side after the car crashed following a high-speed chase. He said he was pulling the passenger from the car when the driver restarted it and began reversing. Murray said the driver and passenger pulled him halfway into the vehicle and struck him.
Murray said he pulled up the handbrake, slowing the car, before the passenger opened the door and both men tried to throw him out. He said the passenger exited and the driver kicked him repeatedly, with a final kick to his face throwing him from the car.
Keith Spencer BL, defending Coelho, said his client denied dragging Murray into the car and suggested the garda had jumped into the window. Murray denied that account. The trial continued before Judge Melanie Greally and a jury.
