John Titiloye was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on 24 July 2023 to 10 years in prison for manslaughter, with the final year suspended for two years. Mr Justice Paul McDermott backdated the sentence to 11 August 2021, when Titiloye went into custody.

Titiloye had pleaded not guilty to murdering Ademola Giwa in the Mac Uilliam Road area of Tallaght on 10 August 2021. The proceedings were reported on 24 May 2023. A jury found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter that month.

The jury unanimously rejected the prosecution case that Titiloye intentionally stabbed Giwa in the neck intending to kill or cause serious injury. Titiloye's position was that he had a knife for self-defence and returned to the altercation to protect his father, who had sustained an injury to his eye.

At sentencing, the judge said the confrontation followed a dispute over a €100 debt and a scooter. He said Titiloye had run into the fight, stabbed Giwa and left without helping him. The judge also said the attack was an immediate response to what Titiloye saw happen to his father.
