John Murphy appeals conviction for charity theft

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

John Murphy’s appeal against his conviction for charity theft was awaiting judgment at the Court of Appeal, reported on 4 February 2019. The theft concerned money from a charity that sent terminally ill children to Lapland.

Murphy had been convicted of four theft counts involving €18,643 and received a wholly suspended three-year sentence in 2016. His appeal argued that the trial judge had prevented the jury from considering whether he honestly believed he was entitled to move the money between accounts. The Court of Appeal reserved judgment.
