John Merrick was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 22 months in prison, with the final 10 months suspended on strict conditions for 12 months. The proceedings were reported on 11 June 2024.

Merrick pleaded guilty to four charges of indecent assault against one sixth-class pupil and three charges against his classmate. The offences took place at a Dublin school between September 1977 and June 1978.

Judge Pauline Codd imposed 12 months for the offences against the first man and a consecutive 10-month term for those against the second. She identified the pupils’ youth and the breach of trust as the most significant aggravating factors, and noted Merrick’s guilty pleas and letter of remorse.
