John McDonagh was jailed for 32 months by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The proceedings were reported on 17 November 2025.

The collision happened on Ballymun Road on 6 July 2023, when McDonagh struck a man working on preparatory works for the Dublin Metro. The injured party suffered a serious head injury and other fractures, spent almost a year in hospital, and is now a wheelchair user requiring constant assistance.

Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence and disqualified McDonagh from driving for five years. The judge treated McDonagh's failure to remain at the scene, lack of insurance and lack of a driving licence as aggravating factors, and also noted that he had taken cannabis. The report said there was no evidence of excessive speed and that a forensic report placed his speed below the 60km/hr limit.

Garda Peter Morris said a lorry may have obscured McDonagh's view, while other drivers saw the injured party crossing. Michael O'Higgins SC, defending, said the road was busy, described the case as not one of furious driving and submitted that it was at the lower end of the dangerous-driving range. He also said McDonagh wished to apologise and was remorseful.
