John McClean’s sentence for sexually abusing 22 pupils was reduced by the Court of Appeal to two and a half years on 4 July 2024.
McClean had received a four-year term in February 2023, consecutive to an eight-year sentence imposed in 2021 for abusing 23 pupils. The appeal court quashed the 2023 term and resentenced him to a global term of ten and a half years for all 45 offences.
The Court of Appeal said the earlier global sentencing approach lacked transparency and produced disproportionately high sentences for some individual offences. It cited McClean’s guilty pleas, remorse, age and health among factors considered.
