John Kelly pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three counts of theft from the Revenue Commissioners at New Customs House, Dublin. Two similar counts were taken into consideration.

The proceedings were reported on 26 March 2015. The offences took place between March 2005 and January 2006. Kelly collected vehicle registration tax fines from motorists and kept the money, stealing €19,350 in total.

The report said Kelly had over-extended himself financially during the Celtic Tiger era and needed money to repay loans. His counsel said he also needed money for medical procedures to help himself and his wife conceive a child.

Sentencing was due on 17 July. Judge Desmond Hogan indicated that he was unlikely to jail Kelly if he continued repaying the stolen money.
