John Dundon loses appeal against murder conviction

John Dundon’s murder conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 5 December 2024, when it dismissed his appeal.
The appeal concerned a phone conversation recorded while a witness was in prison. Dundon’s counsel argued that it could have undermined the credibility of witnesses whose evidence led to his conviction.
The court found there was no breach of the prosecution’s disclosure duty: when disclosure of the transcripts was sought, they were not in the Director of Public Prosecutions’ possession or procurement. It was not persuaded that the trial was unsatisfactory or the verdict unsafe.
Dundon was convicted in 2013 at the Special Criminal Court of ordering the murder of Shane Geoghegan in Limerick. He is serving a life sentence.
