John Doyle sentenced to five years for violent disorder

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

John Doyle was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, with the final two years suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 18 January 2016 after it found his violent disorder sentence unduly lenient.

The offence occurred at a home in Belturbet, Co Cavan, on 24 February 2014. Doyle had pleaded guilty to violent disorder after initially facing charges including assault causing harm and burglary.

The court said the original two-year sentence was too light and imposed the revised term from the date Doyle first went into custody. The suspended portion was subject to a peace bond, good behaviour and supervision by the Probation Service.
