Jason Bonney loses appeal over getaway driving conviction

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Jason Bonney’s conviction for facilitating the Hutch criminal organisation in David Byrne’s murder was upheld by the Supreme Court on 21 July 2026.

The Special Criminal Court convicted Bonney of facilitating the organisation by providing access to a black BMW on the day Byrne was killed at Dublin’s Regency Hotel.

The Supreme Court said the trial court wrongly treated one defence witness’s evidence as alibi evidence, but the error made no difference to the verdict.

The court held the rebuttal evidence was admissible and that the trial court had independently rejected both defence witnesses’ evidence.
