Jamie Berry was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three years in prison, with the final three months suspended. He pleaded guilty to affray, violent disorder and two counts of assault causing harm. The offences took place in Dublin city centre on 3 November 2020. The proceedings were reported on 3 March 2026.

The court heard that about 11 men from the Sheriff Street area in north inner-city Dublin crossed the Liffey to attack men from Berry’s area in the Pearse House complex. In the ensuing street fight involving hatchets, knives and bats, Berry stabbed two men in the back, Sergeant Eoin Kirwan told prosecuting counsel Shaun Smyth. One suffered a punctured lung and the other superficial wounds.

Berry was himself hit on the head with a hatchet during the incident on Creighton Street and required more than 70 staples to his head. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Judge Orla Crowe described the men’s behaviour as “absolutely outrageous” and said it must have been terrifying for passers-by. She dated the sentence from when Berry pleaded guilty in January and suspended the final three months at the request of defence counsel Keith Spencer, who noted that the sentence would extend Berry’s time in custody.

Berry was already serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence for conspiracy to murder a teenager in February 2021. He had six other previous convictions, including for drugs, assault and public order offences. In mitigation, Spencer said Berry had matured, had two young children and had experienced childhood difficulties. He said the groups had since calmed down and everyone involved regretted the incident afterwards.
