James Murphy was jailed for five years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for possessing cocaine, heroin and cannabis and unlawfully possessing a submachine gun and a Smith and Wesson revolver. The proceedings were reported on 6 April 2022.

Murphy pleaded guilty to all five possession charges. His lawyers said he had built up a drug debt and was forced to store the drugs and firearms after struggling with cocaine use, isolation and the deaths of his parents.

Judge Martin Nolan described the offences as very serious and took account of Murphy's work history, personal challenges, community involvement and supporting letters.
