This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

James Maughan was sentenced to three years, with the final two suspended, for social welfare fraud at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 3 December 2016. He had claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance in a false name while receiving disability benefit, taking €438 from the Department of Social Protection in July 2015. His identity was established after investigators matched his photograph through facial recognition software.

Maughan pleaded guilty and had 55 previous convictions, including 11 for social welfare fraud. Judge Melanie Greally noted that he had repaid the money and made efforts to rehabilitate himself. The court had previously adjourned sentencing while he attended rehabilitation, but he later left and was remanded in custody after a bench warrant was issued.
