James Colton was jailed for 15 months and banned from driving for five years after driving dangerously around Crumlin and Sundrive while under the influence of intoxicants, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard. He had pleaded guilty to three dangerous-driving counts, driving without a licence, criminal damage and failing to report a traffic incident. He was disqualified from driving at the time and had 76 previous convictions.
The court heard that Colton drove at more than 100 km/h, on the wrong side of the road and onto the kerb, narrowly missing a cyclist before crashing into a parked van. The collision caused €11,150 in damage. Judge Martin Nolan cited Colton’s cooperation with gardaí and guilty pleas as mitigating factors when sentencing him.
