Jack Cummins was jailed for six years after pleading guilty to procuring the assault that left Alanna Quinn Idris permanently blind in one eye. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard on 29 July that he made phone calls to his cousin after an exchange with Ms Quinn Idris’s friend, and that assailants then attacked them in Ballyfermot in December 2021.
Judge Pauline Codd imposed a seven-year sentence for procuring the assault, suspending its final year, and ordered concurrent sentences of six years for violent disorder and three years for assault causing harm. Ms Quinn Idris said outside court that she did not consider the outcome fair and described the lifelong effect of her injuries. She also said she hoped to use her platform to highlight violence against women.
During her victim impact evidence, Ms Quinn Idris described earlier unpleasant encounters with Cummins, some of which became physical, and said she believed he had harassed and targeted her. The court heard that a fourth assailant, who struck her with an electric scooter saddle, has never been identified.
