Imelda Hanlon avoided a prison sentence for stealing pension money from elderly customers at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. She pleaded guilty to ten sample counts of theft from an 81-count indictment. The proceedings were reported on 9 December 2016.
Hanlon stole €18,752 from ten elderly people over four years by keeping back small amounts from their old-age pension payments. The thefts occurred between 2010 and 2014, and An Post began investigating unusual transactions in 2014. An Post reimbursed the victims, while Hanlon later repaid An Post.
Defence counsel Katherine McGillicuddy BL said the thefts began opportunistically and became a habit, while Hanlon used some money for maintenance and dinners involving her partner's children. Counsel said Hanlon did not live lavishly and had been dismissed from the post office.
Judge Martin Nolan described the offending as serious because it targeted a vulnerable section of the community. He imposed a two-year sentence, suspended on strict conditions.
