Igor Khatlamadzhiyev’s extradition proceedings over alleged thefts and robberies were terminated by the High Court on 1 April 2020. The proceedings concerned alleged offences in Russia between November 1997 and February 1998.
Mr Justice Donald Binchy had sought assurances from Russian authorities about a fair trial and prison conditions, but no response was received despite a reminder. Khatlamadzhiyev had been held in custody since his arrest in August 2018, including 18 months on remand, according to the report.
His counsel, Kieran Kelly BL, asked for him to be discharged from the proceedings and immediately released from custody. Mr Justice Tony Hunt told Mr Kelly and solicitor Tony Hughes to inform Khatlamadzhiyev of the “good news”.
