By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Ibrahim Ahmed Gharib was jailed for 10 years for rape by the Central Criminal Court on 21 February 2018. The offence occurred at the victim’s home in Carlow after a bus journey from Dublin.

A jury had returned unanimous guilty verdicts after a three-week trial. Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy said the rape warranted 12 years but reduced the sentence because Gharib had no relevant previous convictions and was a non-national living in Ireland. He had also been convicted of sexually assaulting the woman on the bus and threatening to kill her.
