Han Chung Tang was ordered to complete community service for assault causing harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 29 July 2024. The attack took place at a takeaway in Kimmage, Dublin.
Tang and co-worker Dawei Zhang each pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and producing a knife during a dispute at the restaurant on 27 July 2019. The court heard that Tang struck Zhang with a meat cleaver before Zhang stabbed Tang repeatedly.
Judge Martina Baxter ordered Tang to perform 240 hours of community service in lieu of a two-year sentence. She imposed the same community-service requirement on Zhang in lieu of a two-and-a-half-year sentence.
The judge took account of the men’s lack of previous convictions and noted that neither had come to gardaí’s attention since the incident. Tang was treated in hospital for multiple stab wounds and required blood transfusions; Zhang received treatment for lacerations.
