Graham Meagher lost his appeal against an eight-year sentence, with the final two years suspended, for assault causing serious harm at the Court of Appeal on 11 May 2018. The assault happened at an address in Clogheen, County Tipperary, on 12 June 2014.

The court upheld the sentence after hearing that Meagher struck PJ Kelly, then aged 66, several times with a poker stand. Kelly suffered brain damage, cannot communicate and remains in residential care. The appeal court found the sentence was within the sentencing judge’s discretion and dismissed the appeal.
