Gerald Vollrath given suspended sentence for attempted murder
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
Gerald Vollrath was given a fully suspended three-year sentence for attempting to murder his dying mother. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder, while an original murder charge was dropped after pathological tests found no signs of suffocation and could not prove she was not already dead.
The proceedings were reported on 24 February 2014. Mr Justice Paul Carney took account of Vollrath’s compassion-based motivation, early guilty plea, full cooperation, remorse and lack of previous convictions. The sentence was suspended on his entering a bond to be of good behaviour, and he was free to go after entering it.
