This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gary Walsh was jailed for eight years, with the final three suspended, for manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court on 10 July 2017.

The sentence followed two trials in which juries could not agree a verdict before the State accepted Walsh’s guilty plea to manslaughter.

The court heard that Walsh had been drinking for about 24 hours before repeatedly punching Cathal Sweeney at a flat in Terenure, Dublin.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said the appropriate penalty was 10 years, reduced because of Walsh’s guilty plea, and described his remorse as genuine.
