Gary Kinlan was jailed for three years for robbing a cash box containing €25,000. The proceedings were reported on 22 July 2019.

Kinlan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery of the cash box at Crown Alley, Temple Bar. The robbery took place on 3 December 2018.

The cash-in-transit driver dropped the box in fear after Kinlan pressed a metal object he believed was a knife into his side. Nail clippers were found on Kinlan after his arrest. He initially admitted approaching the driver with them but later said he could not recall using them. His defence counsel, Eoin Lawlor, said Kinlan had no idea how much money was in the box, which was recovered intact and untampered with.

Earlier on the day of the robbery, Kinlan had received an eight-month suspended sentence at Dublin District Court for another offence. He had also entered a good behaviour bond and been bound to keep the peace.

Judge Cormac Quinn backdated the three-year sentence to December 2018. He considered the effect on the victim and the amount involved, as well as Kinlan’s personal circumstances, drug and alcohol issues and the spur-of-the-moment nature of the offence.
